A Quick Getaway: The Society Hotel in Bingen, WA

If you’re craving a short escape from Portland, The Society Hotel in Bingen, Washington is just about 1 hour and 15 minutes away.  Close enough for an easy overnight but far enough to feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere. A friend and I spent a night there recently, and it was the perfect little Portland getaway. The setting feels peaceful and tucked away, with a beautiful atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and unwind.

The Stay

Tucked in the Columbia River Gorge, the hotel is a restored schoolhouse with a modern, clean, minimal design. When you walk into the main building, the lobby has a library-like feel with warm lighting, a fireplace, and a cozy bar and café tucked to one side. You can stay in elevated hostel-style bunks (under $40 a night), a private room in the schoolhouse, or one of the standalone cabins spread around the courtyard. Even the rooms are labeled after school subjects, a fun nod to the building’s past.

The Spa

Besides the calmness and beauty of the entire property, the hotel is really known for its bathhouse and spa. Overnight guests can reserve a complimentary 90-minute session, which includes access to a sauna, warm saltwater pool, hot soaking pool, and cold plunge. Phones are discouraged in the spa area, which makes it easy to actually unplug and slow down. The hotel offers towels, robes and access to locker rooms.

Bonus stop: We had every intention of going for a hike on the way home, but somehow ended up at one of my favorite wineries, Stave & Stone (crazy how that happens sometimes).

If you’re looking for a nearby getaway that’s relaxing but easy to plan, The Society Hotel in Bingen is worth checking out. The spa access alone makes it feel like a real reset, even if you’re only there for a night.
